Wolf Run is now regarded by most slot machine fans as one of IGT’s greatest ever games. It’s been awarded the special ‘Killer Slot’ status, alongside Rainbow Riches Pots of Gold and Cleopatra, which is an accolade that Da Vinci Diamonds has never managed to achieve.
As with everything in life that’s a real success, Wolf Run has been re-made several times. If you spin the reels of another game called Lil’ Lady, you’re actually playing a re-skinned version of this classic machine. Coyote Moon and Desert Spirit are two other well known variants of this classic machine and there’s even been a more modern 50 pay-line version called Wild Wolf that’s already been re-skinned as Grand Monarch.
The original Wolf Run slot machine does however look a little dated now. It was produced for the video cabinets of Las Vegas a few years before broadband made the internet casino craze flip into top gear. Back then Wolf Run looked pretty good, but now developers have really plugged into the processor power available from most people’s home PCs and there is a high standard of design for new slots. IGT have countered this by releasing a special version of Wolf Run called Wolf Run Classic, which has freshly re-vamped graphics to fit in with some of the more modern looking games.
Howling Like A…
Wolf Run Classic has a strong and definite North American theme to both it’s reel art, and background. You’ll notice many of the symbols of the Native American people on the reels, including tribal totems. These are backed up by some of the most well known wolf breeds as well as a husky, so you’ve got all the North American canine and lupine action you could ever want. This makes us think that somewhere along the line that this machine has been inspired by the famous Jack London novel, The Call Of The Wild, which is rather apt as you’ll see when we discuss the special symbols.
The soundtrack to Wolf Run Classic will be recognised by most staunch slot machine players as the standard IGT reel music that’s been featured on many games from the last decade. Fortunately there is more to the sound FX than just this cheesy old tune (and who plays any casino game for the audio?) with loads of cool wolf howls that accompany the big wins on the reels.
What about special symbols? Well you certainly won’t be disappointed here. The wild symbols, which are wolves howling at the moon, appear in stacks (or should that be packs, as theses are wolves after all) on the reels. When combined with this slot machine’s big forty pay-line structure you can really hit the big time wins with these wilds.

As We Dance, By The Moonlight
The other kind of special symbol in Wolf Run Classic is the bonus activating scatter, which has been clearly labelled to make it stand out on the grid. If you’re lucky enough to hit three of these symbols on the middle three reels then you’ll activate the free spin round. This takes you to a special second set of reels, known as the Moonlit reels, which feature even more stacked wilds and bonus activating scatters than the regular set. Here you’ll receive five free spins, which may not seem like a lot, but when you actually hit this round, you’ll see that there’s a whole lot of money on offer here.
The Call Of The Wild
Whilst no machine is really good enough to drag us away from the reels of Da Vinci Diamonds for any considerable amount of time, we’ve got to say that Wolf Run Classic is one of the machines that we do really enjoy as it can pay out some really big combination wins and there’s always a lot of action going down at the reels. There’s a reason why this machine is a classic, and in our opinion a big part of that equation has to be its playability, which is up there with the best casino games of all time like Blackjack and Roulette. A definite winner and a slot machine that will be enjoyed for years to come.
